What are mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes are small flying insects that range from 1/8 to 3/8 inch long. Their slender bodies are built around their wings and long beak that they use to pierce the skin of their victims and suck their blood. The life of a mosquito is particularly short. They typically only live for between 10 to 16 days.

When and where are mosquitoes found?

Mosquito season here in the Virginia, Maryland, and DC area usually starts in July and runs through September but it’s not uncommon to have mosquito season start as early as April.Mosquitoes are found where ever there is fresh water where they can lay their eggs. Mosquitoes only need about a thimbleful of water to breed and survive. Common areas for mosquitoes to breed and live near can be the larger bodies of water like streams and ponds, swimming pools to less obvious water areas like roof gutters, bird baths, post-storm puddles and old tires.

Why should I be concerned?

Children and people over 50 should particularly be concerned.

How do I reduce the risks of mosquito bites?

  • Use an insect repellant with DEET or even Avon’s “Skin So Soft” product is an effective bug repellant.
